Because English has been part of the education in most foreign countries, Americans have never been required to learn other languages for travel or other purposes. When traveling abroad, they’re almost assured of finding at least one English speaker in any establishment. This means that learning your neighbors’ languages has been shoved aside. In order to compete in business with Mexico and Canada, Americans should learn French learn to speak spanish and Spanish, rather than holding the belief that everyone else should learn English to be able to communicate with America. Until just a few years ago, US citizens didn’t even think of the United States as having an “official” language. The U.S. is known as a melting pot; the original settlers arrived on its golden shores speaking all kinds of languages. Actually, in certain areas of the United States, this remains obvious.
